HC Deb 27 January 1999 vol 324 c264W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on steps taken recently at the Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment at Dounreay to enhance protection measures against earthquakes; and if he will estimate the cost of this work. [66424]

Mr. Spellar

Work is taking place at the Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment at Dounreay to enhance protection against a number of potential hazards, including earthquakes, while preparing the facility for a further period of operation. Modifications are required to enable the facility to meet standards directly equivalent to those required by the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate for modern civil nuclear facilities. The cost of work related to enhanced protection measures against earthquakes is estimated to be about £9 million.
