HC Deb 25 January 1999 vol 324 c84W
Mr. Green

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what steps his Department has taken to estimate the costs of re-organising secondary education in any area which votes to end selection. [67412]

Ms Estelle Morris

None. As I have explained in my replies to previous questions on the subject of reorganisation which may result from parents voting in favour of ending selection, the law only requires the admissions authorities of the grammar schools involved to change their admission arrangements. Any other changes would be a matter for decision at local level.

Mr. Green

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what funds are available in his Department's budget for helping local education authorities faced with extra costs as a result of secondary school re-organisation following any ballot which ends selective education. [66232]

Ms Estelle Morris

If parents choose to trigger a ballot and vote in favour of removing selection, the law would only require the admissions authorities of the grammar schools involved to change their admission arrangements. Any other changes would be a matter for decision at local level. If schools and local education authorities agreed other changes, they would plan them within the resources available.
