To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what extra resources he has provided for the NHS since 1 May 1997; and if he will make a statement. [66031]

Since May 1997, the following additional resources of £163 million has been allocated to NHS Wales as follows:

  • £600,000 in May 1997 for Breast Cancer;
  • £2.5 million in May 1997 for Primary Care;
  • £9.5 million in October 1997 to alleviate winter pressures and emergencies;
  • £113 million cash increase for 1998–99 including £60.2 million new money from the 1997 Budget and £1.3 million from Welsh Office Block;
  • £25.1 million in March 1998 to bring inpatient waiting lists down; and,
  • £12.5 million in November 1998 to alleviate winter pressures and emergencies.

In July 1998, following the Government's Comprehensive Spending Review, an additional £175, £345 and £510 million—a total of over £1 billion—was announced to be available for health for the 3 years from April 1999.
