Mr. Swinney

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will provide a breakdown of all allocations of money over £10,000 for research projects into crime, the causes of crime, the prison system, the police or the criminal justice system; if he will give the allocations over £10,000 already made for such research projects for financial years 1998–99 and 1999–2000; if he will give the total funds available for each of the next three financial years for such projects; and what percentage of this will be under the control of the Scottish Parliament. [holding answer 18 January 1999]: Research on crime, the causes of crime, the prison Development Fund in 1997–98 and (b) commissioned by his Department to be funded from the Mental Health Development Fund in (i) 1998–99 and (ii) 1999–2000; what is the total proposed budget for such projects for each of the next three financial years; and what percentage of this he estimates will be under the control of the Scottish Parliament. [holding answer 18 January 1999]: The first allocation made from the Mental Health Development Fund issued during financial year 1998–99. Awards over £10,000 in that year were as follows:

system, the police and the criminal justice system is commissioned by The Scottish Office from its criminal law research vote and, in part, from the social work research vote (offender social work services). Funds available from these research votes over the next three years are shown in the following table. From July 1999, these funds will come under the control of the Scottish Parliament.
