§ Ms Glenda JacksonThe introduction of catalytic converters on vehicles has been a major factor in reducing traffic pollution and contributing to improvements in air quality. The Government have a range of measures promoting cleaner vehicles, but these are not aimed either at favouring or displacing catalyst technology. Tighter exhaust emission standards to be introduced in 2000, with a further tightening in 2005 and beyond, will see an expansion of effective emission reduction technology on new petrol, diesel and gas powered vehicles. Catalysts are also a key factor in the development of future fuel cell technology. Only pure electric vehicles have no need for catalysts.
Purchasers of low emission technology vehicles—both electric and catalysed—are eligible for financial support through the Energy Saving Trust's "Powershift" programme. We are also looking at electric, hybrid and fuel cell technologies through the DTI's Foresight Vehicle Programme.
