HC Deb 18 January 1999 vol 323 cc296-7W
Mr. Ruane

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what estimate he has made of the number of new small and medium enterprises which were set up in each county in Wales for each of the past 10 years. [65417]

Mr. Hain

There are no estimates available centrally of the number of small or medium enterprises that have been set up in each county.

However, the Department of Trade and Industry publishes estimates of the number of enterprises registering for VAT, which serve as a guide to the pattern of business start-ups. The following table shows the number of VAT registrations from 1994 to 1997, for unitary authorities in Wales. Information prior to 1994 is available only for the former Welsh county structure.
