To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will make a statement on funding of higher education. [64061]

Mr. Mudie

As a result of the modernisation of funding arrangements for higher education, an extra £776 million will be available for higher education over the next two years, 1999–2000, and 2000–2001 under the plans announced on 8 December 1998.

This very good settlement will allow for growth in student numbers, for improving quality and raising standards, for investment in teaching and IT infrastructure and for boosting research.
