HL Deb 11 January 1999 vol 596 cc9-10WA
Lord Marlesford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will consider using those serving community service sentences to keep road verges clear of litter. [HL343]

Lord Williams of Mostyn

It is for individual probation services to decide which kinds of work offenders should be required to undertake within the framework of the Community Service National Standard.

It is already possible for offenders to be assigned to litter clearance work, and some probation services have made arrangements with local authorities accordingly, subject to being satisfied about the health and safety implications for offenders and supervisory staff.
