HC Deb 25 February 1999 vol 326 cc370-1W
12. Mr. Derek Twigg

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will introduce measures to ensure that companies with strong potential for long-term growth are not forced into insolvency because of short-term difficulties. [71608]

Mr. Byers

I have recently set up a review to consider existing procedures for business rescues and what more can be done to enable fundamentally sound business to survive short-term difficulties. It will report by the end of July.

21. Mr. Gareth Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what plans he has for helping entrepreneurs whose businesses fail through no fault of their own. [71619]

Dr. Howells

As announced in the Competitiveness White Paper, officials are considering whether insolvency law (and particularly bankruptcy law) and practice inhibit enterprise. An initial report will be made to Ministers by the end of April 1999, which will consider what changes might be made to current law and practice.
