§ Clare Short(a) Uganda: since May 1997 we have supported the following democracy-building projects in Uganda:

Project Amount committed £ Support to Parliament (ongoing) 312,375 Support to Local Government Elections (ongoing) 250,000 Support to Women Politicians (ongoing-preparatory) 40,000 Election Observers (finished) 40,000 There are also some small democracy building elements to our portfolio of projects in Uganda aimed at supporting the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action for Women, to which we have committed £500,000.
(b) Indonesia: I recently approved a contribution of up to £1 million to support a free, fair and inclusive election in Indonesia. Most of this will be channelled through the United Nations Development Programme and will support voter education, electoral administration and election monitoring. We are also supporting a three-year project implemented by the International Labour Organisation to develop workers capacity to organise and administer trade unions, and to represent workers interests effectively in consultations with employers and government.
