To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many foreign nationals, excluding Irish nationals, serving prison sentences in the UK have(a) applied for repatriation to their home countries in the last two years to complete their sentences and (b) had their applications granted; and if he will make a statement. The number of foreign national prisoners (excluding Irish nationals) in England and Wales who applied for repatriation to their home countries to complete their sentences were as follows:

  • 1997: 90
  • 1998: 112.

The number1 of foreign national prisoners (excluding Irish nationals) transferred from England and Wales to their home country over the same period were:

  • 1997: 5
  • 1998: 20.

Figures relating to Scotland and Northern Ireland are the responsibility of the Secretaries of State for Scotland and for Northern Ireland respectively. 1These figures do not necessarily relate to applications made in the same period.
