Mr. Boswell

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what estimate he has made of the annual cost to the NHS of(a) the national minimum wage and (b) the working time regulations. [69762]

Mr. Denham

[holding answer 8 February 1999]There are no national rates of pay for adult staff working in the National Health Service at or below the national Minimum Wage level of £3.60 per hour.

Responsibility for implementing the Working Time Regulations is for local National Health Service employers. Information on the cost of implementing the regulations is not available centrally.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what estimate he has made of the annual additional cost to the NHS resulting from the European working time directive. [69741]
