To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what assessment he has made of the impact that the merger of GEC Marconi and British Aerospace will have on defence procurement(a) within the United Kingdom and (b) overseas; and if he will make a statement. [70501]

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the defence implications of the BAe-GEC Marconi merger. [70516]

Mr. Spellar

The proposed merger of BAe and Marconi will be subject to regulatory approval and it is therefore not appropriate for me to comment at this stage. The MOD's views on the military aspects of the merger will be given to the regulatory authorities in confidence at the appropriate time.
