To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the in-service date for the 120 millimetre stretch programme replacement for the Challenger 2 CHARM ammunition system. [71491]

[holding answer 16 February 1999]Challenger 2 is expected to be in service with the British Army until 2025. As a key battle winning equipment, it will be the subject of enhancements throughout its life in order that it can continue to provide an effective capability. A number of enhancement measures are already being considered for the future. Specific details regarding these enhancements are classified, for reasons of operational security.
