HC Deb 16 February 1999 vol 325 c605W
Mr. Baker

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what controls exist on the trade in endangered species between states of the European Union. [71418]

Mr. Meale

The trade in endangered species is regulated by Council Regulation (EC) No 338/97, which implements the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) within the European Union. Certificates are required to enable the sale or commercial use of species listed in Annex A of the Regulation and to allow the movement of wild taken specimens of these species. Certificates are also required to enable the re-export of CITES specimens by other EU Member States and owners of CITES specimens may at any time be required to provide evidence to confirm that these were lawfully imported or acquired.
