To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many(a) members of the staff of his Department and (b) persons otherwise attached to his Department have served with the UN weapons inspectors in Iraq since 1991. [67018]

[holding answer 25 January 1999]: (a) Fourteen FCO employees have served with the UN weapons inspectors in Iraq since 1991.

(b) The FCO recruits, administers and, in most cases, pays for all UK-supplied personnel serving with the UN weapons inspectors in Iraq (including UNSCOM and IAEA). The FCO has supplied 286 such personnel (in addition to the 14 FCO employees) since 1991. These individuals come from the Armed Forces, other Government departments, industry and universities.
