Mr. Skinner

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what are the criteria for appointment to the special medical boards for respiratory diseases. [70176]

Mr. Bayley

Doctors appointed to special medical boards for respiratory diseases must hold full registration with the General Medical Council. They must have not less than five years' post-registration experience in a clinical field relevant to disability assessment, and have successfully completed an appropriate training course in disability analysis, assessment of disablement arising from industrial injuries and prescribed industrial diseases, and in interpretation of chest x-rays and relevant pulmonary function tests.

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will give for each year since 1985 the number of(a) appeals and (b) successful appeals against decisions of special medical boards for respiratory diseases. [70182]
