HC Deb 15 February 1999 vol 325 c451W
Mr. Stunell

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry when he plans to publish the findings of the Renewable Energy Review; and if he will make a statement on targets for renewable energy generation beyond 2010. [66197]

Mr. Battle

I intend to issue a review document shortly. It will examine the status and prospects for renewables, and will suggest possible options for a future programme and invite comments in order to assist us in finalising our future policy.

I am concerned to look up to and beyond 2010 for continued growth in renewables. A growing contribution from new and renewable energy is likely to be required for any future greenhouse gas reduction commitments, provide additional competition and diversity in the generation market, and a UK industry to supply home and export markets. It is not the case that any target represents an end in itself. It is a step along the way to achieving a sustainable energy supply.
