To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security (1) how many working miners are in receipt of a disability pension for pneumoconiosis; [69930]

(2) how many former mineworkers are in receipt of a disability pension for pneumoconiosis; and how many cases were made an award in the last year for which figures are available. [69929]

The information is not available in the format requested. Such information as is available is as follows.

At 5 April 1997 there were approximately 7,700 awards' of Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit (IIDB) in payment in respect of pneumoconiosis (prescribed disease D1) where the attributable industry was coalmining. In the 1997–98 year there were 229 new awards2 for pneumoconiosis made where coal was the attributable agent. It is not known how many of these people may still be employed in the industry.
