Mr. Skinner

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will list the number of(a) applications for and (b) awards of disablement benefit for (i) chronic bronchitis and (ii) emphysema since 13 September 1993 in respect of coal miners (1) for the United Kingdom as a whole and (2) for each of the regional special medical boarding centres for respiratory diseases. 1. The special medical boarding centre at Sheffield transferred to Leeds in 1996.

2. Figures are not available separately for chronic bronchitis and emphysema, because they are prescribed as one disease (PD D12) for Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit.

3. Claim figures for Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit for chronic bronchitis and emphysema are not available for each of the boarding centres but are provided for Great Britain and for the Benefits Agency (BA) Area Directorate. These areas changed boundaries at April 1996 and this is reflected in the tables.

4. Details of special medical boards are not available for Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit claims data and are available only for awards data until 30 September 1997.
