To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if she will list the expenditure incurred by her Department, agencies and non-departmental public bodies on(a) the setting up and (b) the operation of web sites, indicating the cases in which the expenditure has been above that budgeted; and if she will list for each web site (i) the topics covered, (ii) the current average number of hits per month and (iii) the estimated expenditure on each web site for each of the next three years. The information is as follows.

(a) Expenditure incurred setting up the NICS Web Service. The initial set up costs for the current NICS Web Service amounted to £8,500 capital expenditure in 1997. Staff costs associated with the set up are not available.

(b) Expenditure incurred in the operation of the web site. The expenditure incurred in 1998–99 will be £226,700 broken down as follows:

  • Maintenance £7,300;
  • Connection to the Internet Service Provider (ISP) £26,900;
  • Ongoing development £137,500; and
  • Capital £55,000.
