HC Deb 11 February 1999 vol 325 c355W
Mr. Hancock

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what factors underlay the decision to pay working families tax credit benefits through the pay packet. [69754]

Dawn Primarolo

Paying the Working Families Tax Credit and the Disabled Persons Tax Credit through the pay packet, rather than as a welfare benefit, will reduce the stigma associated with claiming in-work support. The clear link with employment should demonstrate the rewards of work over welfare and ensure that people move off welfare into work.

Mr. Stevenson

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many families in(a) Stoke-on-Trent and (b) the West Midlands will benefit from the working families tax credit. [69729]

Dawn Primarolo

It is estimated that for the West Midlands Region there will be about 120,000 families in receipt of the Working Families Tax Credit in 2000–01, the first full year of the credit. This estimate is based on data from the 1995–96 Family Resources Survey. Estimates below regional level are not available.

Mr. Pike

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the number of people who will gain from the introduction of the working families tax credit in the North West Region. [63198]

Dawn Primarolo
