To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will make a statement of the number of students studying physics, indicating those studying(a) radioactivity and (b) nuclear physics. [68999]

The number of students studying physics in UK higher education institutions in 1997–98, the latest year for which data are available, is shown in the following table:
