HC Deb 11 February 1999 vol 325 c348W
Mr. Viggers

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how long are the courses leading to(a) a diploma in midwifery and (b) a degree in midwifery; how much are the fees for such courses; and how the cost of the fees is allocated between the employer and the employee within the NHS. [70147]

Mr. Denham

Courses leading to a diploma in midwifery last 3 years. Courses leading to a degree last either 3 or 4 years. For those who already hold a registered nursing qualification there is also a 78 week programme in midwifery.

The fees for midwifery degree or diploma courses vary from university to university. Where courses are commissioned by the National Health Service, students' fees are met in full from the non-medical education and training levy.

Mr. Viggers

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many midwives have been appointed to primary care management groups. [70149]

Mr. Denham

Primary care group boards contain nurses who have a range of broad-based skills and specialities, including midwifery. Additional nurses with specialist skills have also been co-opted onto the boards.
