to facilitate (i) clinical governance, (ii) the dissemination of good practice, (iii) performance management and (iv) cost-effectiveness within disablement services; [69665]

(2) how many (a) prostheses, (b) orthoses, (c) wheelchairs and (d) electronic assistive devices were supplied by the NHS in each of the last three years. [69664]

Mr. Hutton

There are no statistics collected on prostheses, orthoses or electronic assistive devices. The only data collected centrally on the number of wheelchairs issued are for electrically-powered indoor/outdoor wheelchairs. The total number of these issued so far to users is:

  • 1996–97: 714
  • 1997–98: 4,308
  • 1998–99: 2,022.

Data are collected on the number of vouchers issued to users through the wheelchair voucher scheme and the number of these issued so far to users is:

  • 1997–98: 811
  • 1998–99: 1,550.

Issues of clinical governance and performance management are managed locally, and dissemination of good practice is coordinated through regional offices of the National Health Service Executive.
