HC Deb 13 December 1999 vol 341 cc89-90W
Mr. McNamara

To ask the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department what training is being given to the judiciary on the implications for their work of the incorporation of the European Convention on Human Rights into United Kingdom law. [102067]

Jane Kennedy

Judicial training is the responsibility of the Judicial Studies Board (JSB) which is an independent non-departmental public body and is chaired by Lord Justice Waller.

Between January and July 2000 the JSB will be holding a series of 58 one-day seminars on the Human Rights Act 1998 and the European Convention on Human Rights for all judges (including those who sit part-time) from District Judge level to the Court of Appeal.

In addition the JSB is holding a series of after-court seminars at the Royal Courts of Justice for the senior judiciary. The first of these seminars was held in May 1999 and the series will continue during 2000.
