§ Mr. Ian StewartTo ask the Secretary of State for Health what Government funding is available for HIV and AIDS research; and how this is distributed between the NHS regions. [99388]
§ Yvette CooperEstimated total Government funding for HIV/AIDS research in 1999–2000 will be £16 million, of which £10 million will be spent by the Medical Research Council. The rest of the funding will be split between the Public Health Laboratory Service, the Centre for Applied Microbiology and Research, the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control, other research councils and Government Departments. Funding is not allocated across National Health Service regions, but is awarded to the research centre best able to undertake high quality work.
Project details of work directly funded by the Department or supported through the NHS research and development levy can be found on the National Research Register. This is available in the Library and most medical libraries on CD-Rom, and on the internet: http://www.doh.gov.uk/nrr.htm.
