HC Deb 06 December 1999 vol 340 cc411-4W
Charlotte Atkins

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will list by local education authority the number of additional nursery school places created since May 1997. [100007]

Ms Hodge

Since September 1998, all four-year-olds have been eligible for a free early education place. Currently around 587,000, or 95 per cent., of these places are taken up.

In addition, we are making available £390 million over three years to almost double the number of three-year-olds in England able to access a free early education place. These resources will fund 190,000 new places by March 2002. From September 1999, £40 million of this new money has been allocated to the 57 local education authorities with the highest levels of social need, to create around 48,000 new, free places during 1999–2000. From April 2000, additional funding for three-year-olds will be distributed across all local education authorities, again prioritised by social need.

The table shows the number of places that we expect to be created across all authorities by 2000–01. We have yet to determine the allocation for 2001–02.
