HL Deb 02 December 1999 vol 607 cc53-4WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will refuse licences for the export of pumps and ancillary equipment for use in connection with oil pipelines in the Sudan; and whether they will ask the European Union and other governments to do likewise. [HL56]

The Minister for Science, Department of Trade and Industry (Lord Sainsbury of Turville)

The export of oil pipeline umps and ancillary equipment to Sudan is not generally subject to control. All applications for a licence to export controlled items to Sudan are considered very carefully, irrespective of their intended end-use, against the relevant criteria and in light of current circumstances in Sudan and the continuing EU arms embargo. Details of all export licensing decisions between 2 May 1997 and 31 December 1998 were set out in the Government's first and second annual reports on strategic export controls. The report for 1999 will be published 'in due course.
