HL Deb 28 April 1999 vol 600 cc44-5WA
Lord Eames

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether current legislation is sufficient to safeguard the welfare of animals in the United Kingdom. [HL2133]

Lord Williams of Mostyn

Yes, there is a considerable body of law affording protection to animals in a range of circumstances.

The Government are committed to high standards of animal welfare, and will continue to improve these standards at European Union and national level. The Government are concerned to ensure that animals are not permitted to suffer unnecessarily and, to this end, animal welfare legislation is continually reviewed.
