HC Deb 28 October 1998 vol 318 c164W
Dr. Lynne Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will make a statement on the current trend in UK emissions of greenhouse gases; and what estimate he has made of the level of such emissions in 2010 relative to those in 1990.[56513]

Mr. Meale

Total emissions of greenhouse gases from the UK have fallen from 215 million tonnes carbon equivalent in 1990 to 204 million tonnes carbon equivalent in 1996, the latest year for which figures are available.

Assuming existing policies and measures, total greenhouse gas emissions are expected to fall by approximately 10 per cent. from 1990 to 2010. Earlier this week, my Department launched a consultation document on additional policy options for meeting its climate change targets.
