§ Mr. JenkinTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what measures he will pursue to promote the recovery of native trout and salmon stocks in Scottish rivers. [56302]
§ Mr. MacdonaldThe Government are well aware of the importance of salmon and native trout and the need to ensure their conservation status. For many years they have funded research by a number of bodies including the Fisheries Research Services (FRS). That commitment remains and the table lists ongoing research by the Services' Freshwater Fisheries Laboratory at Faskally. Back-up support is also being provided to the biologists employed by the various fishery trusts established on the West of Scotland.
74Wand the Department is aware of no evidence to suggest that the level of applications from individuals will change significantly once the new legislation is in force.
