HC Deb 19 October 1998 vol 317 c1039W
Mr. Chaytor

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what plans he has to support the development of the British manufacture of wind turbines. [54848]

Mr. Battle

Under the Non-Fossil Fuel Obligation (NFFO) the Government are supporting the commercial development of wind energy in the UK. At 30 June 1998, there were 55 wind projects operational, comprising 132 MW Declared Net Capacity. In addition a further 69 wind projects, comprising 368 MW of contracted capacity will be developed in England and Wales under the NFFO-5 Order which I announced recently.

As part of my current New and Renewable Energy Policy Review, I am considering both the status of the UK wind industry including its prospects in both the home and export markets and its potential contribution to meeting industrial and employment goals, and the need for further research and development. I expect to make an announcement later this year.
