HC Deb 19 October 1998 vol 317 c904W
Laura Moffatt

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what measures in the New Deal for Transport will benefit women using public transport. [53473]

Ms Glenda Jackson

OurNew Deal for Transport will benefit women using public transport by putting a greater emphasis on better quality transport services; providing safer public transport through initiatives such as the Secure Station Scheme; improving the quality of the pedestrian environment; and promoting land use policies which encourage local services. These measures are in addition to the mainstreaming of women's transport needs throughout the development and application of transport policies and programmes through, for example, gender audit checklists for transport planners and operators and revised Planning Policy Guidance taking full account of women's transport needs.

We are committed to improving transport services for women—the Ministerial Sub-Committee on Women's Issues considered the issue at its inaugural meeting.
