To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many(a) private pet owners and (b) commercial dog and cat breeders were prosecuted, and on what charges, under anti-rabies quarantine legislation in each of the last five years. [55470]

Information on the breakdown of prosecutions between those of private pet owners and those of commercial dog and cat breeders is not held centrally. The number of prosecutions under the Rabies (Importation of Dogs, Cats and Other Mammals) Order 1974 reported to this Department by local authorities in each of the last five years is:

  • 1993: 53
  • 1994: 71
  • 1995: 64
  • 1996: 66
  • 1997: 50.
