HC Deb 19 October 1998 vol 317 c1046W
Mr. Todd

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what progress has been made in consultation and negotiation on the Multilateral Agreement on Investment; and if he will make a statement. [53902]

Mr. Wilson

At the recent OECD Ministerial meeting (27–28 April 1998), it was agreed that negotiations should continue, seeking a successful and timely conclusion; no deadline was set but I foresee work continuing until the next Ministerial in May 1999, including a period for assessment and further consultation.

My hon. Friend the Minister for Small Firms, Trade and Industry reported to the Commons Select Committee on European Legislation on the negotiations on the Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI) on 8 July and undertook to keep the Committee informed of further developments in negotiations.
