HC Deb 19 October 1998 vol 317 cc920-1W
Mr. Wyatt

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport (1) if he will urgently review the regulatory role of the BBC Board of Governors; and if he will make a statement; [55277]

(2) if he will add proposals for reform of the BBC's self-regulatory structure into his Department's Green Paper. [55276]

Janet Anderson

There are no plans to review the regulatory role of the BBC Board of Governors.

The Green Paper on the future regulation of broadcasting and telecommunications was published on 21 July. It argues that the present system of regulation has sufficient flexibility to deal with developments in these markets for some time. Views are invited on when it will become necessary to make fundamental changes to the regime, and what regulatory aims, methods and structure might then be appropriate. Decisions on these broad issues must precede consideration of specifics such as the future regulation of public service broadcasting.
