HL Deb 07 October 1998 vol 593 cc85-6WA
Lord Mackenzie of Framwellgate

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What plans they have to strengthen immigration legislation to tackle abuse of the United Kingdom's immigration control. [HL3349]

The Minister of State, Home Office (Lord Williams of Mostyn)

The Government are firmly committed to ensuring that those who seek to migrate to the United Kingdom, but have no grounds for doing so under the Immigration Rules, are prevented from coming here.

From one minute past midnight on Thursday 8 October we will therefore require nationals of the Slovak Republic to obtain visas to come to the United Kingdom. Slovak nationals will also have to obtain a Direct Airside Transit Visa when they intend to remain airside while in transit through the United Kingdom.
