§ Sir Robert SmithTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish figures for the re-offending rates, broken down by age group, following(a) custodial sentences, (b) community sentences and (c) fines, in each of the last three years for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement. [60452]
§ Mr. McLeishThe available information is given in the table. The analysis provides figures on the percentage of individuals sentenced in 1993 who were re-convicted within one, two and three years of the date of sentence, by the type of sentence passed and by the age of the offender at the time of sentence. Convictions for most motoring offences and for some relatively minor statutory offences are excluded. The database does not hold information on the date of release from custody. Re-convictions may therefore include convictions for other crimes committed prior to the date of sentence, thus over-stating the actual rate of re-conviction. 873W
