HC Deb 19 November 1998 vol 319 cc823-4W
Mr. Truswell

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will review the operation of the provisions of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 relating to the revoking and reinstatement of private hire or taxi drivers' operating licences by local authorities in cases of conviction for dishonesty, indecency or violence. [60324]

Ms Glenda Jackson

Exercise of the powers concerned is a matter for local authorities. It is they who are best placed to reach a decision, in the light of the circumstances of each particular case. The Act gives drivers a right of appeal to the local magistrates' court. I have at present no plans for a review.

the Government are drawing together the results of the consultation with potential bidders, and finalising the detailed structure of the public/private partnership.
