HC Deb 19 November 1998 vol 319 c706W
Mr. Livingstone

To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office what progress has been made since January 1996 in reviewing and releasing the records of the Joint Intelligence Committee; where in the Public Record Office the records are which have been released since then; which years are covered by records which have been released since then; what records are now planned to be reviewed for release; and if he will make a statement. [60289]

Mr. Kilfoyle

Since 1996 JIC minutes and memoranda for the years 1951 to 1955 have been reviewed. Those records found to be no longer sensitive have been transferred to the Public Record Office (PRO) at Kew for release with the following class references—CAB 159/9-21 and CAB 158/12-22.

JIC minutes and memoranda for the years 1956 to 1959 have also been reviewed and those found to be no longer sensitive have recently been transferred to the PRO at Kew for public access in January 1999. These records will have the class references CAB 159/22-32 and CAB 158/23-38.

JIC records for 1960 and later years will continue to be released every year in three-year tranches until the review has been completed.
