HC Deb 19 November 1998 vol 319 c713W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer of 2 November 1998,Official Report, column 356, if he will make a statement on the policy of the military garrision on the Falkland Islands not to purchase for its use mutton and lamb raised on the Falkland Islands. [58713]

Mr. Spellar

Booker's decisions on sourcing products for use by the Armed Forces at home and overseas are based on my Department's requirement that it seek the best prices consistent with meeting our quality specification and assuring continuity of supply. We require it to look to buy British products wherever this cost is effective. I have asked my officials to review the arrangements for the supply of lamb to the Falklands Island Garrison. I shall write to the hon. Member when this review is completed in the New Year.
