To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the pay settlements which have been reached for teaching staff in institutions of higher and further education in Scotland in(a) 1995–96, (b) 1996–97, (c) 1997–98 and (d) 1998–99. [56955]

Pay settlements for teaching staff in higher education institutions are set out in the table.

1 2 per cent. from 1 April and a further 1.8 per cent. from 1 October

The University and Colleges Employers' Association (UCEA) negotiates pay on behalf of the universities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, St. Andrews, Stirling and Strathclyde and Heriot-Watt University. The conference of Scottish Centrally Funded Colleges (CSCFC) negotiates pay for the remaining 11 Scottish higher education institutions.

Pay settlements in the further education sector in Scotland are the responsibility of individual college boards of management. Details of the terms and conditions of each college settlement are not held centrally.
