HC Deb 18 November 1998 vol 319 c630W
Mr. Gordon Prentice

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how much has been spent on(a) defence-related capital projects and (b) maintaining the military presence in the Falklands in each year since the end of the Falklands War. [57856]

Mr. Doug Henderson

My Department does not hold centrally the entire cost of maintaining the military presence in the Falklands since the Falklands Campaign. However, our records show the following expenditure:

£ million
Years (a) Garrison capital costs (b) Garrison total costs (including capital costs)
1983–84 192 391
1984–85 219 403
1985–86 221 396
1986–87 110 236
1987–88 42 118
1988–89 3 59
1989–90 2 60
1990–91 figures no longer held 66
1991–92 figures no longer held 51
1992–93 figures no longer held 58
1993–94 figures no longer held 67
1994–95 1 66
1995–96 3 66
1996–97 6 81
1997–98 3 76

Notes:

  1. 1. All figures £ million in-year cash.
  2. 2. Garrison capital costs between 1983–88 include the construction costs of Mount Pleasant Airfield.
  3. 3. Garrison costs after 1990–91 omit a number of elements, e.g. freight, food and spares, which were previously included in the Garrison costs but which are no longer attributed to the Commander British Forces Falkland Islands' Budget, and could be provided only at disproportionate cost. Figures from 1991–92 onwards include pay, which was not included in the figures compiled previously, and again pay for the period could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
  4. 4. The figures given do not include residual costs of the Falklands Campaign.
  5. 5. Garrison costs from 1991–92 include the costs of the Commander British Forces Falkland Islands' budget only. These do not include the costs of the RAF airbridge to the Falkland Islands, or the cost of naval deployments to the South Atlantic. These figures fall to other budgets and cannot be identified separately. It is not known whether these costs were included in figures before 1991–92.
