To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what proportion of armed services uniforms are currently supplied by companies operating(a) offshore and (b) in Britain. [58784]

[holding answer 9 November 1998]: The information is not available in the form requested. It is possible, however, to give information on the total value of current contracts that have been placed centrally for clothing worn by members of the armed services. The total value of such contracts as at 6 November 1998 is £164.5m. Of these, contracts to the value of £120.63m have been placed with UK firms.

The value of contract with UK firms where the work is carried out overseas, including by overseas subcontractors, is £43.17m.
