HC Deb 16 November 1998 vol 319 cc341-2W
Mr. Edwards

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will make a statement on the(a) level of tolls on the Severn Bridge, (b) introduction of two way tolling and (c) concessions for local commuters. [59561]

Ms Glenda Jackson

The Severn Bridges Act 1992 provides for the tolls charged at the Severn Bridges to increase annually in line with the RPI, rounded to a convenient sum. Since 1 January 1998 the tolls have been £4.00 for a car and £8.10 and £12.10 for larger vehicles. As of 1 January 1999 these tolls will rise to £4.20, £8.40 and £12.50, respectively. The Act provides for one-way tolling and for concessionary tolls. Severn Bridge Crossing plc offer a concession for regular users who pay monthly for a tag. There are no plans for the government to legislate to change the current toll structure.
