HC Deb 16 November 1998 vol 319 cc328-9W
Mr. Gordon Prentice

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what permissions are required before BNFL is allowed to transport radioactive material by road. [58342]

Ms Glenda Jackson

BNFL, in common with any other operator, would require some or all of the following permissions, over and above those required for any other road transport operation, depending on the quantity and nature of the radioactive material:

  • Certification of Vocational Driver Training;
  • Approval by DETR of the material;
  • Approval by DETR of the package design;
  • Approval by DETR of the shipment;
  • Approval of the Director of Civil Nuclear Security.

Those permissions conform fully with the safety and security recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency and directives of the European Union.

Additional requirements, including import/export controls, may apply where the transport forms part of a transboundary shipment.
