HC Deb 16 November 1998 vol 319 cc418-9W
Mr. Baker

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list the registers held by his Department which are open for inspection by(a) hon. Members and (b) members of the public. [59744]

Mr. Tony Lloyd

We keep registers of births, marriages and deaths at British consulates abroad. Only Consular officers have access to the master registers kept at post but information from them can be supplied to bona fide applicants on request. Copies of these registers are transmitted annually to the Office for National Statistics, and indexes to them are then made generally available (to hon. Members and members of the public) at the Family Records Centre at 1 Myddleton Street, London, EC1.
