To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will commission a research study in Scotland on children adopted from care. [58809]

Mr. Galbraith

The case for a research study will be kept under review as the number of children adopted from care under the new procedures in the Children (Scotland) Act 1995 grows. A number of legislative changes, including improvements in the process for adoption from care, were recommended by The Review of Adoption Law in Scotland published in 1993. Those changes were introduced by the 1995 Act and associated regulations and came into effect from April 1997.
