To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what action he proposes to take following the statement by the Chief Constable of Manchester relating to racism in his police force. [59072]

Individual chief officers of police are responsible for ensuring that they deliver their services fairly to all sections of society. More generally, this is a matter which is currently being considered by the inquiry which my right hon. Friend set up into matters arising from the tragic death of Stephen Lawrence and it would not be appropriate for me to comment in advance of the report of that inquiry.
